#TheNewWeek: Essential Viewing – Kofi Kingston

The New Day Become Champions

Extreme Rules, 2015

For the longest time, it seemed Kofi Kingston was destined to spend his entire professional wrestling career as a babyface. He had Ricky Steamboat levels of babyface sympathy, and didn’t seem to have an evil bone in his body. Combined with a flashy moveset, it looked as though Kofi would actually be incapable of performing as a heel.

Enter the New Day.

I had extreme reservations about WWE putting three black wrestlers together, and making them angry heels. The rumors of a “new nation” came around the same time as serious racial issues were rising in cities across the U.S. and that… that seemed like a recipe for disaster. I wrote then about what a disaster that could be.
I’m so glad I was wrong.

Heel Kofi… and New Day in general… have been utterly amazing.

Never was I happier for this revitalized group of heels than the day they won their first WWE Tag Team Championship.

And for good measure, check out when they won their second tag championship against The Prime Time Players.
