Bang for Your Buck PPV Review: WrestleMania XXX

JOHN CENA DEFEATS BRAY WYATT

vlcsnap-2014-04-07-11h51m08s14

Worst Case Scenario: The Andre the Giant Battle Memorial Royale causes the time for this match to be cut. John Cena makes Bray Wyatt tap out to the STF quicker than the Road Warriors took out Power and Glory with the Doomsday Device at WrestleMania VII (which is like, hilariously quickly.)

What Nick Wants to Happen: This match gets the most time on the card, pulling the “Angle-Michaels main event” where the best match is given the most time even though it couldn’t logically go on last. Also, Bray Wyatt wins dirtier than Bourbon Street the morning after Fat Tuesday.

While Cena going over Wyatt begs the question: Why, it at the very least doesn’t beg the question “Why the F*CK would you do that, assholes?”. Cena nearly gave up on himself and the tenets of Hustle, Loyalty and Respect. But instead of disappointing girls, children and even Hulk Hogan, Cena managed to stay true to himself and … hit Eric Rowan with a chair? Also, look at that face. That’s the face John Cena made after he won the match.

Either way, Bray Wyatt was made into an even bigger star than he already was last night, which was the fundamental purpose of the match. That John Cena won was sort of fait accompli given the rest of the card — though yr correspondent will freely admit they guessed nearly every match wrong — but within that an interesting story was told.

Wyatt, more so than any other “monster” that Cena has had to work with is capable of keeping up with Cena on physical and intellectual level. He — meaning the character of Bray Wyatt and not Windham Rotunda — is aware that getting under the hero’s skin is just as important as beating. From the very beginning of the match — and throughout the entirety of the program, in fact — Wyatt made it clear that his goal was not to win the match but to show whatever Cena’s true colors are (if they aren’t hot pink, hot green and black, of course).

So while he didn’t “win”, the seeds were at least planted — going into the future — that Wyatt may win the war against the “good guys” despite having lost such a major battle. It’s why Wyatt isn’t a “monster of the week”, but — along with the Shield, Cesaro and Daniel Bryan — the very near future of the business. And if nothing else, this match proved that definitively.
