Bang for Your Buck PPV Review: Night of Champions

US Championship Match

Sheamus (C) vs. Cesaro

Man, this was all a boy who grew up watching cartoons wrestle each other could ever ask for. Sheamus is easily the most underrated performer of his generation — a top flight worker who is, as the kids on Straight Shoot say “over like rover” that gets knocked for any number of things because of what could best be described as the irredeemable stupidity of people obsessed with their own perceptions of what a “good” wrestler is — and Cesaro might be the best performer of his generation, full stop.

So, what do you get when you put the two of them together? HOSS FIGHT! HOSSSSSSSSS FIIIIIGGGGGGHHHHHHTTTT!

Every other match on this card was somewhere at least nominally lived up to the most important parts of their given expectations. This was the type of match that ends up on a DVD collection at the end of someone’s career. If one were to do a deep dive of either man’s back catalogue, they would be hard-pressed to see a better match, and would likely find it impossible to find a better encapsulation of what makes both of them wonderful.

Sheamus and Cesaro are the standardbearers of an entire epoch where people become professional wrestlers because they like professional wrestling and would rather do it than, say, soccer or Celtic football. They are legitimately remarkable athletes who have dedicated their lives to mastering an artform instead of simply doing the best they can just to collect the biggest paychecks.

It’s uncertain whether Sheamus will ever find his way back to the main event, or if Cesaro will ever make it there in the first place. But if they keep putting on performances like this, it likely won’t matter all that much.
